Daejeon Museum of Art (대전시립미술관 – 대전광역시) & Hanbat Arboretum (한밭수목원)

Daejeon Museum of Art

To take advantage of the long weekend due to Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), I took a trip to Daejeon Museum of Art and Hanbat Arboretum. Both of which were on my list of places to visit. Daejeon Museum of Art for its spectrum of art pieces and Hanbat Arboretum for its diversity in plants as well as its beauty.

My first stop was the Daejeon Museum of Art. The admission fee for this museum was 500WON~ $0.50USD (which is really amazing).

Prior to entering the art museum, there were already several pieces that impressed me. One of which is black lion below. At first glance, I thought it was made of metal. However, upon closer look, it is actually made up of old tires. What an incredible way to recycle.

  1. Fractal Turtleship by Nam June Paik – made of discarded electronic devices to give homage to the General Yi’s turtleship that saved Korea.
  2. Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore by Kim Eunhyung –
  3. Certain Scenery painting series by Park Sul
  4. .A Certain Magnificent Scenery painting series by Yoo Geun-taek – art pieces inspired by everyday life that he lived.
  5. Two People by Yoo Geun-taek
  6. Namgogri in Winter by Whang Inkie
  7. Red Painting by Lee Seahyun – art in red instead of the traditional black and inspired by DMZ.

The museum definitely showed an aspect of Korean culture and they make it in a way that was absolutely stunning. If you have a chance to go visit, please do. You will not regret it.

Hanbat Arboretum

Another beautiful place to visit that is less than 15 minute walk away from Daejeon Museum of Art is the Hanbat Arboretum. It is the largest man made urban arboretum (Wiki) and it is stunning (me). Green everywhere and no words can do it justice. There were fish in the water, flowers blooming, and the view was incredible.

Walking through the arboretum was calming and it felt like a great escape from the bustling of the city. I’d definitely want to go back again soon during winter to see the difference between the seasons.

If you are ever in Daejeon, make sure to check out these beautiful places!
